Research directions¶
GRIMdata's next investigations build on the published studies, documentary methods and public tools developed through SGBV-UPR and LittleRainbowRights.
SGBV-UPR renewal¶
Published research · Planned renewal
Available now: the 2022 SADC study and its published methodological discussion. The historical research archive remains private.
Next investigation: complete the original UPR Cycle 3 coverage and extend Cycle 4 analysis across all UPR countries. The country universe will follow UPR participation, independently of the LRR scorecard's country list.
| Stage | Intended output | Dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Define coverage and comparison questions | Corpus specification, source register and explicit historical comparison scope | Legal and computational review |
| Complete original Cycle 3 coverage | Documented collection and validated extraction with gaps recorded | Source access, research time and format handling |
| Extend Cycle 4 analysis globally | Country-organized analysis with contextual review and coverage accounting | Computational capacity and legal interpretation |
| Evaluate comparisons and publication | Methods, limitations and research findings | Validation, privacy, attribution and source-rights review |
The planned global analysis will proceed in batches, with country coverage and extraction gaps recorded throughout.

LittleRainbowRights¶
Research & available public tools
Available now: source-linked country assessments, the published scorecard snapshot, charts, comparisons, downloads, source-transparency tools and DigitalChild documentation.
Next investigation: maintain dated evidence, examine coverage gaps and interpretations, and develop the index's usefulness across document sources. Source maintenance will pair availability checks with review of legal meaning and interpretation.

Canadian Projects & Environmental Oversight¶
Planned · Canada first
This direction concerns Build Canada and other major Canadian projects: how project commitments, decisions and oversight change over time, and what the sources establish about environmental consequences, Indigenous rights, climate and affordability claims.
The inquiry asks:
- What was announced, approved or changed, and when?
- Which oversight requirements and public commitments apply?
- What is documented about consultation, consent-related commitments and affected lands?
- What evidence supports climate, housing or affordability claims, and which costs remain uncertain?
Next investigation: define the project/source register and comparison questions, then develop dated project histories that distinguish commitments, decisions and evidence of implementation.
Intended outputs: documented methods, source-linked timelines, comparisons and visualizations.
Research Provenance & Institutional Continuity¶
Proposed research
The proposed AI-Assisted Research Provenance, Institutional Continuation & Public Accountability track examines how contributions, methods and knowledge persist across grants, institutions, people and outputs.
Its questions include:
- How are contributions and research trajectories documented and attributed?
- What is preserved or lost when trainees, researchers or funding move on?
- Which onboarding, handoff and offboarding practices help research continue?
- How do institutional power and access shape the futures available to contributors?
Next investigation: define case-study boundaries, evidence and attribution practices, then test a combined computational, qualitative and comparative approach. The approach combines AI-assisted classification, entity resolution or event identification with examination of the underlying records.
Intended outputs: a validated methodology, research-continuity guidance and reproducible workflow components.
The connection to Viability.^. concerns how continuity arrangements expand or restrict the possibilities available to research and its contributors.
Programme progress and software history¶
Research questions and available outputs are described on each project page. Software development is recorded in the DigitalChild/LRR roadmap and API implementation history.
